Carrying the Vote Tee
Carrying the Vote Tee
Black women technically gained the right to vote in the United States after the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution on August 26, 1920. The amendment states that "the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex". However, many Black women were unable to vote in 1920 due to barriers such as poll taxes, literacy tests, voter ID requirements, and intimidation and violence. In the North and West, Black women were able to vote alongside their families, but in the South, officials often refused to register Black women or confronted them with hostility.
Black women's struggle for suffrage began in the early 1800s and continued for over a century. They helped pass the 15th Amendment, which gave Black men the right to vote, but not Black women. After the 19th Amendment, Black women and other women of color continued to fight for voting rights, and their efforts culminated in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
